How to Find the Capricornus Constellation

The constellation Capricornus makes up a small bent-up looking pattern in the sky near the constellation Sagittarius. The stars of Capricornus are best observed in the northern hemisphere summer (southern hemisphere winter). Its one of the oldest-known constellations in the sky and has long been the celestial avatar for a sea goat.   This chart shows Capricornus as a pair of triangles connected by a long line. Look for it near Sagittarius in the skies of July through late September. Carolyn Collins Petersen   Finding Capricornus To locate Capricornus, simply look for the constellation Sagittarius. Its in the southern skies for observers located north of the equator, and higher in the northern sky for folks south of the equator. Capricornus looks very much like a squashed-looking triangle. Some charts, like the one shown here, depict it as two triangles arranged along a long line. It lies along the ecliptic, which is the path the Sun appears to take across the sky throughout the year. The Moon and planets also appear to move roughly along the ecliptic.   All About Capricornus The star pattern we call Capricornus was known to the ancients at least as far back as the Middle Bronze Age, some 20 centuries before the Common Era. The Babylonians charted the pattern as the Goat-Fish. The Greeks saw it as Amalthea, the goat that saved the life of the infant god Zeus. Over time, Capricornus was referred to more frequently as a sea goat. In China, on the other hand, the constellation was described as a tortoise, while in the South Pacific it was viewed as a cavern. The Stars of Capricornus About 20 stars make up the pattern of Capricornus. The brightest star, ÃŽ ± Capricorni, is called Algedi. Its a multiple star system and its closest member is just over a hundred light-years away from us. The second-brightest star is called ÃŽ ² Capricorni, or more familiarly as Dabih. Its a giant yellow-colored star and is about 340 light-years away from us. One of the more peculiar stars in Capricornus is called delta Capricorni, or Deneb Algedi, which refers to the tail of the sea-goat. The brightest star in the ÃŽ ´ Capricorni multiple star system is whats known to astronomers as an eclipsing binary star. That means that one member of the star eclipses the other every so often, causing the brighter one to dim a bit. Astronomers are also intrigued by the chemical makeup of this strange star because it doesnt quite match the chemistry of other stars of its type. It also appears to rotate quite rapidly.  Ã‚   The official IAU constellation region of Capricornus shows the central pattern, plus other stars within the constellation outline. IAU/Sky Publishing.  Ã‚   Deep-Sky Objects in Capricornus Even though the constellation lies against near the backdrop of the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy, Capricornus doesnt have a lot of easily seen deep-sky objects. Observers with good telescopes can spy out a few very distant galaxies in its boundaries.   In our own galaxy, Capricornus contains the globular star cluster called M30. This tightly packed spherically shaped collection of stars was first observed and cataloged by Charles Messier back in 1764. Its visible through binoculars, but stargazers with a telescope see more details, and those with even larger instruments can make out individual stars in the cluster. M30 has more than a million times the mass of the Sun in its core, and stars that interact there affect each other in ways that astronomers are still working to understand. Its about 93 light-years across and is fairly close to the center of the Milky Way. A Hubble Space Telescope image of the globular cluster Messier 30 (M30) shows many stars tightly packed together at its core. This is the central region of the cluster. NASA/ESA/STScI   Globular clusters like M30 are companions to the Milky Way and contain very old stars. Some have stars much older than the galaxy itself, which indicates that they formed well before the Milky Way, perhaps more than 11 billion years ago. Globular cluster stars are what astronomers call metal-poor because they have very few of the heavier elements beyond hydrogen and helium in their atmospheres. The tactical level is usually found at the company or platoon level, this leader is always looking to accomplish the short term goals in support of the long term mission. Tactical leaders must know how to solve problems quickly and without hesitation, they have more direct influence over soldiers because they are in the trenches with them. At this stage the leader has to council, correct and led their soldiers through the direct approach of leadership. Organization leadership This leadership style is where the leader actually has to plan and synchronize training in order that the small units are able to produce the tactical into the operational action. At the organization level a leader is not in a traditional leadership position when they are directly in charge of soldiers. Leaders in this style are the one whom establish section that develop plans and create orders. When a result is achieved at this level the entire team is responsibility for the outcome. Moby Dick Moby Dick can be viewed as a tragedy. Webster's Dictionary defines tragedy as a "dramatic composition, dealing with a serious or somber theme, typically that of a great person destined through flaw of character or conflict with some overpowering force, fate or circumstance to downfall or destruction." This describes Moby Dick very well, as we discover as the story unfolds. Ahab, one of the key characters in the novel, can be viewed as the protagonist, one who causes the actions that occur and who brings the story to its tragic conclusion. He is seen as the tragic hero. He is a man distinguished by courage and ability, who is admired for his qualities and achievements. The reader can sympathize, feeling pity and compassion for Ahab. We can understand to some extent the feelings that this man must have experienced and we can relate to them. The villain or antagonist to Ahab is Moby Dick, the White Whale whom Ahab pursues, leading to the death of himself and his crew. This leaves Ishmael as the only survivor to tell the story. Ahab is a deeply disturbed man. He could be viewed as a crazy lunatic. Though crazy as he is, he clearly knows what he wants to do and has a clear plan to do it and carries it out to the end. Ahab can be seen as both the tragic hero and a crazy lunatic. The story unfolds in New Bedford, where the narrator Ishmael comes seeking a job on a whaling vessel. In New Bedford he shares a bed at an Inn with a cannibal from New Zealand. The cannibal is a skilled harpooner named Queequeq. Ishmael and Queequeq become immediate friends. The two end up choosing the vessel named The Piquod. One of the two owners, Peleg who they interview with before they are given positions with the ship, describes Ahab as a "...grand, ungodly, god-like man, Captain Ahab; doesn't speak much but when he does speak, then you may well listen." (76) We are told by Peleg that he is "..moody, desperate moody and savage sometimes." "...Better to be a moody good captain than a laughing bad one." (77) The name Ahab is symbolic and taken from the Bible. Ahab was an evil man having had someone killed so he could be king. He was named after his widowed mother, who died when he was only twelve months old. Peleg seems to want Ishmael to overlook the wickedness of Ahab. Ishmael comes away more struck by sympathy and sorrow for him and the loss of his leg, overlooking the dark side of Ahab. Ishmael tells of his impression of Ahab, after they have been out at sea for several days. Ahab was in his cabin out of view of the crew up until then. Ishmael's description gives the reader a picture of the devastation that the whale did to the captain's body. Regardless of Ahab's disabilities, the captain maintains a strong sense of dignity. The reader soon finds that Ahab's temperament is very mean spirited as evidenced in his run in with Stubb, who had suggested that he find some way to muffle the planks when he walked as he disturbed the crew. He no longer finds simple pleasure anymore because of the torment of his obsession. This is illustrated when he throws his favorite pipe into the sea. The pipe is a symbol of peace and tranquility. Not something in the disposition of this man. Melville uses symbols like these throughout the book. During the voyage, Ahab gathers his crew, giving them grog and performing a pagan ceremony to join him in hunting down and killing Moby Dick. This is an example of his manipulation of the crew in to supporting him. He entices them with the prospect of winning a gold doubloon, which he stakes on the mast to the first person that spots the white whale. To appeal to his harpooners he engages them in a pagan blood ceremony. These acts work in getting them on his side. The only one who is horrified by this is Starbuck, his first mate. He sees the mad man, incapable of keeping to the mission at hand, which is harvesting whales for profit. Starbuck acts as a thorn in Ahab's side throughout the story, keeping Ahab somewhat honest during the voyage We can see Ahab as a tormented man; he suffers in physical and mental pain, and is obsessed by only one thing, vengeance against the whale. Sea Sponges Facts When you look at a sponge, the word animal  might not be the first that comes to mind, but sea sponges are animals. There are over 6,000 species of sponges; most live in the marine environment, although there are also freshwater sponges. Natural sponges have been used by humans to clean and bathe with for at least 3,000 years. Sponges are classified in the phylum Porifera. The word Porifera  comes from the Latin words porus (pore) and ferre (bear), meaning pore-bearer. This is a reference to the numerous pores or holes on a sponges surface. It is through these pores that the sponge draws in water from which it feeds. Sponges range in habitat from shallow intertidal areas and coral reefs to the deep sea. They are found in oceans and freshwater lakes throughout the world. Diet and Behavior Most sponges feed on bacteria and organic matter by drawing water in through pores called ostia (singular: ostium), which are openings through which water enters the body. Lining the channels in these pores are collar cells. The collars of these cells surround a hair-like structure called a flagellum. The flagella beat to create water currents. Most sponges also feed on small organisms that come in with the water. There are also a few species of carnivorous sponges that feed by using their spicules to capture prey such as small crustaceans. Water and wastes are circulated out of the body by pores called oscula (singular: osculum). Reproduction and Offspring Sponges reproduce both sexually and asexually. Sexual reproduction occurs through the production of egg and sperm. In some species, these gametes are from the same individual; in others, separate individuals produce eggs and sperm. Fertilization occurs when the gametes are brought into the sponge by currents of water. A larva is formed, and it settles on a substrate where it becomes attached to the rest of its life. Asexual reproduction occurs by budding, which happens when a part of a sponge is broken off, or one of its branch tips is constricted, and then this small piece grows into a new sponge. They may also reproduce asexually by producing packets of cells called gemmules. Threats In general, sponges arent very tasty to most other marine animals. They can contain toxins, and their spicule structure probably doesnt make them very comfortable to digest. Two organisms that eat sponges though are hawksbill sea turtles and nudibranchs. Some nudibranchs will even absorb a sponges toxin while it eats it and then uses the toxin in its own defense. Most of the sponges have been evaluated by the IUCN, as Least Concern. Ancient Greek writers such as Aristotle (384–332 BCE) suggested the best sponge for such tasks was one that is compressible and squeezable but not sticky, and holds great quantities of water in its canals and expels it out when compressed.   You can still buy natural sponges in health food stores or on the Internet. Artificial sponges were not invented until the 1940s, and long before that, commercial sponge harvesting industries developed in many areas, including Tarpon Springs and Key West, Florida.
